By Kate Silfen, Church Historian | March 2025 Council Meeting Report
The Reverend Rachel Barton opened our busy March meeting with a reading from First Corinthians Chapter 16. We welcomed several new members of Council, including new committee chairs and at-large members. Our new Treasurer, Donna Maston, provided a brief update on the Church’s finances. She was pleased to announce that we are transitioning to a new and improved accounting system this month. Our 2024 budget is well underway, and our liquid assets are being consolidated.
Rachel presented a slide show highlighting insights from small group discussions during our Annual Meeting. Members shared what attracted them to Old South, with several groups mentioning our preaching, progressive values, small groups and opportunities for fellowship, and our beautiful, historic building. Participants also discussed what would motivate them to invite a friend to Old South, with many highlighting musical programs and social justice events. Attendees at the Annual Meeting shared their thoughts on growing our church and deepening our cherished community. They suggested more virtual small group meetings, increased digital outreach, and fellowship activities before First Worship.
Council members gathered in small groups to reflect on two questions: “What would you most like to bring to Old South this year?” and “What support do you need from the Church to make this happen?” Many comments from these small groups echoed those shared at our Annual Meeting. Numerous people desired enhanced digital outreach, more musical events, and additional information about the administrative support available for committee chairs.
Stewardship Chair Todd Krohne updated Council members on this year’s stewardship campaign. He expressed gratitude to everyone who pledged for the upcoming year and noted that the number of pledges is expected to rise as the committee conducts further outreach to potential members. He will keep the Council updated as this work progresses.
The Reverend Ashley Popperson closed our meeting with a prayer. She invited all council members to take a moment for silent prayers directed towards a council member of their choice. After the silent prayer, Ashley asked God to be a source of care for those feeling unmoored by current events.
