I've had my heart broken wide open since November. My visit to Standing Rock, followed immediately by Harry's untimely death, followed immediately by the revelation of the fractured state of our political landscape – I've been left feeling more than ever that the Christian witness of Old South Church matters.
Our Christian faith allows us to be brave – not fearless – but brave even in the face of fear. Our faith allows us to do things that scare us because to do nothing is frightening, too.
As we remember one of the 20th century's great saints, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Old South Church invites and calls on you to join in at least one of the following events on either Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. RSVP to john@oldsouth.org.
Shabbat of Justice
Friday, January 13, 6:00 pm
Temple Israel Boston
477 Longwood Ave
With guest Preacher Michael Curry, the President of the Boston Branch of the NAACP, Old South Church will bring a group to the weekly Jewish Shabbat worship at Temple Israel in Boston. This is an evening to inspire and break down barriers of race, faith, and politics.
Courageous and Faith Filled Conversations on Race and Racism
City Mission MLK Day of Learning
Saturday, January 14, 8:30 am-2:00 pm
United Parish Brookline
210 Harvard St, Brookline
Our ministry partner City Mission will host a day of training and conversation, empowering participants to have faith-filled and courageous conversations about race and racism. This daytime event for people of all ages will have children's events as well, tackling one of the most important issues facing our country.
Show up to Help Protect the Affordable Care Act
Sunday, January 15, 12:00-2:00 pm
Faneuil Hall, Boston
Gathered by Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, this timely meeting will gather people together to help fight to protect existing health care protections. Despite our own health care law, the most vulnerable people in Massachusetts would suffer if the Affordable Care Act were simply repealed. Our elected officials will lay out a plan to help protect our healthcare, a plan that needs your help to succeed. A group from Old South Church will leave via the T following Festival Worship.
Christians should be out there making the world a better place. Why not start this weekend?
