Dear Old South Church:
The Search Committee has three amazing finalists. We have met all three in person, listened to their work, observed them conduct, and observed them play both organ and piano. We are in the process of completing our own travels to observe each in situ.
We hope to bring one finalist to the church on a Sunday in April: to rehearse the Chancel Choir, then play and conduct the service, followed by a church-wide ‘Meet the Candidate and Q & A’. We will then welcome the church’s observations in anticipation of our recommendation to the May meeting of the Church Council.
The Minister of Music Search Committee was authorized in February of 2017, less than a year ago. We first convened in March. We have met a couple of times each month since then, including July and August. Our first task was to undertake a season of listening to the church. It wasn’t until June that we actually posted the position description. It is not unusual for a highly deliberative, national search to take this long.
We are feeling both the weighty responsibility of this work and the excitement of a promising new era in the life of this Church.
