On Saturday, June 10, 2017, on the occasion of Boston Pride, Old South Church in Boston honored The Boston Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence – "A modern Order of Nuns, comprised of people of all gender associations, all spiritual affiliations, and all proclivities to do good works." – during Pride Morning Worship. Last year, less than 24 hours following the Pulse Nightclub shooting, The Boston Sisters led a vigil on Copley Square. Under a darkening sky they brought us together and gave us space to cry, wail, rage, laugh, and love again. Their leadership that night—their ministry—was a wonder to behold. They saved us that night from hatred and despair.
The Boston Sisters were presented with the church's Open Door award. Past award recipients include Senator Elizabeth Warren; Rev. Frank Schaefer, who in 2013 made national headlines after being defrocked by the United Methodist Church for officiating his son’s same-sex marriage; and former Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick.
