Now Hiring: Staff Accountant

Old South Church in Boston is seeking a full-time Staff Accountant to execute the day-to-day duties of the business office including paying invoices, completing payroll bi-weekly, basic HR duties, making bank deposits, data entry, and maintaining and monitoring financial records. The staff accountant is also responsible for filing and organizing the accounting files, maintaining office supplies, and creating and updating a procedure manual detailing the processes of the staff accountant position. As the primary processor of payroll, the staff accountant must maintain the utmost confidentiality and the highest standard of accuracy.

Job Type: Full-time, hybrid

Reports to: the Director of Operations and Financial Controller

Salary: $60,000-$75,000 (commensurate with experience) plus generous benefits package

Schedule: Hybrid - Monday through Friday

Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Process all bills in the accounting system, posting the transactions to the relevant expense or fixed asset account as well as to the appropriate fund. 
  • Review vendor statements to ensure all invoices are accounted for.  Keep track of monthly recurring invoices to be sure all are accounted for and paid on a timely basis.
  • Using the external payroll provider, Paychex, prepare bi-weekly payrolls for all church and preschool employees and account for all payroll expenses at the department level within the accounting system
  • Work with the director of operations to ensure appropriate onboarding and off boarding procedures particularly as it pertains to payroll and benefits
  • Establish and implement procedures for collecting revenue information for all aspects of church activities: building use, stewardship, fundraising campaigns, and grant activity
  • Assist with month end closing activities under the supervision of the Financial Controller; post approved adjusting entries to the general ledger


  • Bachelor’s degree, or higher, in accounting
  •  3+ years of progressively more demanding accounting roles
  • Familiarity with nonprofit and/or faith-based organization accounting a plus
  • Knowledge and experience with fund accounting; familiarity with ACS accounting software a plus
  • Organized, good time management skills
  • Comfortable with current technology including Office 365, Google applications and online filing systems
  • Good communications skills, willingness to work with volunteers
